Healthcare Facilities in general are more aware of waste volumes and the need for sustainability and environmental initiatives in 2010 than ever before and today are actively seeking and reviewing ways to minimize and reduce waste.
A recent study has shown clear evidence of how one key initiative can significantly reduce waste volumes with the introduction of a “Reusable Safety Engineered Sharps Container”.
The key element that drives the waste reduction is the elimination of disposable sharps container and replacement with a Reusable Sharps container, eliminating the weight of the disposable container being placed into the waste stream. A further benefit is the elimination of the Cardboard Waste that disposable containers are packaged in when delivered to the facility.
The use of a reusable container can reduce up to 3.9 tons per 100 beds converted.
In the recent study,
28% Waste Reduction with Sharpsmart Safety Device
– a 5 year, 103 Hospital Study, conducted by Daniels Sharpsmart Inc, there were a couple of key findings from the Study
1. There was a significant reduction in waste generated in the 103 Hospitals reviewed
2. There was a significant reduction in the numbers of containers required to be changed due to the efficiency of the Reusable Sharps container system installed in the 103 hospitals
